Fine Art

GHAL is home to a selection of fine artwork by artist Cheryl Davies. Her work relates closely to the Welsh Borders and this comes through in a range of subjects from buildings through to botanical drawings. Cheryl uses various media for her work but tends to favour pastels for the vibrant colour that they provide and various grades of pencil for the precision they give to architectural drawings. Gareth graduated in Geography from the same university and has worked in the rail and bus industry throughout South Wales, the Welsh Borders and the West Midlands. He has now turned his attention to writing and illustrating in the fields of transport geography and history.

These form the basis of a series of GHAL Transport and Industrial Geography books.

Prints of Original Paintings & Drawings

We produce a comprehensive range of prints, some of which form illustrations in our local book series. Subjects such as the old pubs of Ledbury, railway architecture, steam engines, signal boxes, maps and other architectural effects stand alongside botanical drawings and landscapes.

About Us

Cheryl’s background as a botanist steered her towards artwork in this subject. However, art is never static and over the years since GHAL started, her style and subject matter have evolved. Today she is an accomplished artist and draughtsperson with an eye for detail, especially with buildings and structures, seeing in them the more unusual aspects of juxtaposition with their surroundings. Her favourite media are pastel and pencil which, with that keen botanist’s eye, she uses to maximum effect. Cheryl is a regular exhibitor in Herefordshire Art Week, undertakes an amount of private commission work and provides illustrations for GHAL Publications.

Gareth’s background as a transport geographer led him into a career in transport. He began with British Rail and has worked in the bus industry, with various local authorities and with West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive before going freelance. He made the news in the 1980’s when he negotiated and set up the first independent ticket office on the British Rail system at Ledbury. It is still there. Since GHAL started, Cheryl and he have been concentrating on a series of books on transport, industry and local history with the aim of developing a portfolio of specialist books on subjects that are not covered by the main publishers. Gareth also gives talks and lectures on various aspects of transport and industry.

The cost and difficulty of publishing led to them establishing GHAL as a self-contained unit. All books are researched, written, illustrated, printed and published by GHAL. Constraints on book size and print runs have been a good discipline and have led to the publication of concise books with precisely presented information and a good supply of illustrations. Gareth’s past work as a feature writer and essayist stands him in good stead, whilst Cheryl’s meticulous eye for detail is a great asset.

In-house production and publication means that GHAL books are kept at a reasonable price and to maintain this GHAL prints to order. To further keep costs at a reasonable level GHAL sells directly to customer via mail order. GHAL Productions is based in the small market town of Ledbury in Herefordshire where Cheryl and Gareth can be contacted as below. A comprehensive free catalogue of GHAL publications is available on request.
