GHAL is run by Cheryl Davies with the help of partner Gareth Calan Davies from the old medieval town of Ledbury, Herefordshire in the Welsh Borders - an area which provides a source of much inspiration. Cheryl graduated in Botany at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and earlier worked in the fields of microbiology and medical research but also latterly for charities including the NSPCC, Macmillan Fund and the Royal Air Forces Association. Over thirty years of living in Ledbury has given her a great love of Herefordshire and the Borders, its countryside and old buildings. This comes through in her skill as an illustrator for many of the GHAL books, as well as in her paintings and botanical drawings. Between 1994 and 1996 she undertook a part-time course at Herefordshire College of Art and in 2003 set up GHAL as a small business to provide a wider audience for her artwork and as a vehicle for new writings. Gareth graduated
in Geography from the same university and has worked in the rail and
bus industry throughout South Wales, the Welsh Borders and the West
Midlands. He has now turned his attention to writing and illustrating
in the fields of transport geography and history. These form the basis
of a series of GHAL Transport and Industrial Geography books. He also
manages to fit in some driving of local country buses and this provides
a further insight into the history of the Borders known as the Welsh
Marches. As a result of his experiences GHAL is home to an interesting
transport archive especially in the lesser known subjects such as railway
architecture and signalling.
